For more than forty years, Salon du livre de Montréal has brought together readers, artists and the publishing world for its annual event. Its mission is to promote and enhance books and reading as cultural goods. Special attention is paid to the creation of visual tools for each edition.

Principal has worked with the Salon du livre for several years and acts as art director. Each year, the event must have its own visual language and help build and enhance the identity of the institution. Thus, a new Quebec-based illustrator is invited to work on the project each year. Illustration therefore embodies the central element of an integrated design project where collaboration between designers and creators is essential.

This year, we wanted to publicize the work of Nicolas Ménard, whose work we have admired for several years. Nicolas’ playful universes communicate strong, free and unique ideas, a nod to the 1970s. Through the creation of wacky characters, these visuals convey the values of pleasure and diversity. As all of the illustrations were individually animated, it was easy to create all kinds of dynamic variations.

The campaign was deployed in posters in the city, metro stations, newspapers, digital media, magazines, on the web, through social networks and on TV, in addition to institutional communication tools and signage for the physical event.
